Hantavirus risk in Brazil

Brazil has reported Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) since 1993, with most cases in the Atlantic Forest biome and the central cerrado. Multiple hantavirus strains circulate in Brazilian rodent populations; Necromys lasiurus is a key reservoir in central Brazil. While Brazilian strains differ from the 2026 ANDV cruise-ship cluster, enhanced cross-border surveillance is in effect.
