Hantavirus activity has been detected in rodent populations across Peru's highland and jungle regions, with sporadic human cases reported since the early 2000s. Peruvian strains differ from ANDV but share rodent-to-human transmission routes. Peru's national health institute is participating in regional surveillance coordination during the 2026 outbreak.
