Hantavirus risk in Chile

ANDV was first isolated in Chile in 1997, and the country remains one of the virus's primary endemic zones. The Andes strain circulates in southern Chile — particularly Araucanía and Los Lagos — and is uniquely capable of person-to-person transmission, documented in several Chilean family clusters. Chilean health authorities have issued heightened alerts following the 2026 MV Hondius outbreak.
