Hantavirus risk in China

China reports more hantavirus cases than any other country — tens of thousands annually — caused primarily by Hantaan and Seoul strains that produce hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). These strains are genetically distinct from the 2026 ANDV cruise-ship cluster. No China-linked cases from the MV Hondius outbreak have been confirmed by Chinese health authorities.
