Hantavirus risk in Germany

Germany has one of Europe's highest hantavirus incidences, driven by the Puumala strain carried by bank voles. Puumala causes nephropathia epidemica — a kidney disease — rather than the pulmonary syndrome seen in the 2026 ANDV outbreak. Case peaks correlate with bank vole population booms, typically every 3–4 years. No Germany-linked cases from the MV Hondius cluster have been confirmed.
