Hantavirus risk in United States

The United States has recorded over 850 Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) cases since 1993, concentrated in the Four Corners region. The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) is the primary reservoir for the Sin Nombre strain, the dominant US variant. US strains are genetically distinct from the 2026 ANDV cruise-ship cluster; no US-acquired cases linked to MV Hondius have been confirmed by the CDC.
